resources for avoiding plagiarism

Below are links to three different websites that help to explain different types of plagiarism and how to avoid it.

This simple website gives an overview of what plagiarism is and provides examples of different information and sources that need to be properly cited. In addition, you can find a list of techniques on how to avoid plagiarizing and includes an “Ask the Experts” feature where you can review frequently asked questions or submit a new question.

This website offers numerous resources about appropriate academic and research-based writing techniques, examples of appropriate paraphrasing and exercises for you to complete and check, guides for accurate MLA and APA citation, and several strategies to avoid plagiarism.

While some sites give an overview of all academic writing, UW–Madison’s Writer’s Handbook splits the types of academic writing into categories: literary analysis papers, proposals and dissertations, research papers, literature reviews and scientific reports. For each category, there are listed resources and samples in addition to techniques on how to appropriately cite the used sources. They include examples of good and bad paraphrasing of a paragraph and explain why they are good or bad, when you should quote or paraphrase a source, and practices that will improve your writing overall.
